II. The preface The Universal Concept Technical Guide to Hair Design does not ask hairdressers to follow the steps to recreate the five haircuts and one hairstyle introduced in this book. Rather, it asks them to expose themselves to the idea of delivering haircuts using different haircutting systems, by dissecting and comparing these haircuts in great detail. This book is meant to demonstrate that there are unlimited haircuts, and each one can be executed in many different ways and delivered by many different haircutting systems. Different haircutting systems involve different haircutting approaches, concepts, tools and techniques. Different hairdressers create them at different times, each of whom has his own beliefs, principles, preferences and styles. This book is meant to serve as a reference, from which hairdressers can pick and choose elements to use in developing their own hair design and haircutting systems. It is important to remember that perfecting one haircutting system, or a certain amount of haircuts, will not improve hairdressers’ craftsmanship as significantly learning many different haircutting systems—hairdressers are advised to look for inspiration both within their own countries and at styles and trends from around the world. There are many haircutting systems to learn, and we advise dedicated and committed hairdressers to search for and master as many as they can. Once hairdressers have learned different haircutting systems, they will have many options in delivering each haircut. Furthermore, they can create unlimited hair designs to customize haircuts for each individual client, as well as keeping their cutting, creative and competitive edges sharp. 3
