About the Author

My name is ray fung, and I have been a hairdresser since 1987. In 1993, I opened my own private hair studio in New Canaan, Connecticut. I have invested in advanced haircutting classes since 1996 and attended numerous major academies and trade shows to become more knowledgeable and improve my skills. During that time, I found myself always drawing hair diagrams, and before I knew it, I had boxes of them.

Years of drawing made me understand more and more about how to create, construct and design haircuts; it allowed me to take time to think about what I did in cutting hair on daily basis. Every time I got off from work, I would sit down and draw most, if not all, of the haircuts I did that day. I started to understand more and more about how to create new haircuts, as well as how to document, remember, improve and evolve the haircuts I was doing. In addition to that, I started to understand all of the haircuts I saw in the advanced training classes I attended; otherwise it would have been very confusing for me to watch so many different hairdressers doing so many different haircuts in so many different ways. Most of all, it helped me to apply what I had learned to my work.

I also started to believe that the more I learned, the more there was out there waiting for me to learn. Since then, I have realized that learning has no final destination, but rather it is a journey, in which one of searches for higher education and advanced training.

The beauty school I attended was in suburban New York, and the sign for Head People School of Hair Design was what caught my eyes to make that vital u-turn of my life to sign up to be a hairdresser. Since I had always wanted to be a designer, and I liked to work with people, I decided to give it a try and enrolled. Even though I had a great time being there, it was far from the hair design I expected to learn. The name of the school was as close as I could get to hair design.

With what I have discovered about hair design elements and principles, I hope we are one step closer in learning hair design. Hair design is no longer just a name, but a training curriculum and lessons plan that can really teach hairdressers how to custom-design haircuts to fit all of the clients’ individual needs.
