Thanks Leo!
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Leo Passage and his organization, Pivot Point International, for their continuous efforts to educate hairdressers with amazing videos, DVD and books. For me, the most important thing I learned from them is their uses of graphic hair diagrams to illustrate all of the haircuts they demonstrated. It changed the way I learned and taught haircutting, because I started to understand how haircuts are constructed. In time, I began to draw hair diagrams to document haircuts that I learned and haircuts that I did. After drawing for a period of time, I started to recognize hair design elements, and learned how to manipulate them to become different components of haircuts. I saw patterns of haircuts, and I discovered that there are many options within each pattern, and from which I could choose to create and construct haircuts to fit each individual client’s needs and desires, applying great creativity, consistency, efficiency and accuracy. After years of intensive drawing and studying, I discovered the relativity of hair design elements, so I no longer have to memorize what I learned; now I utilize my creative mind to custom design and customize haircuts. I applaud and thank the contributions from Leo Passage and his organization, Pivot Point International for their continuous and tireless effort to deliver the best higher education and advanced training to hairdressers.
“My goal was to adapt the Bauhaus philosophy to hairdressing to allow a craftsman to see and think as a designer” He took the language and analytical approach of Bauhaus art and industrial design and the design discipline and applied it to hair styling. The work became the foundation of Pivot Point’s “Scientific Approach to Hair Design. “ A Pivot Point education enables individuals to apply the elements and principles that form the building blocks of all design, allowing them to predict results and create personalized looks for their clients rather than function as mere technicians.” “ What makes the system effective is how it trains the mind and the eyes as well as the hands. We believe in the importance of teaching a designer ‘why’ as well as ‘how’ something works. Knowing ‘how’ only results in technical skill, while knowing ‘why’ allows one the freedom to create.” “ His advice for a new generation of beauty artists: “ Seek out and appreciate the best mentors in your life, surround yourself with people who have a positive attitude and always believe in yourself. Dedicate yourself to lifelong learning and make your career your ‘hobby’. You will always have fun working.” – Leo Passage’s thirst for knowledge, on February 08, in Modern Salon Magazine.
